Short Synopsis
Study in Aesthetic Democracy, No.1 is intended both as a traditional musical composition, i.e. an artistic impetus, which in the broadest possible sense leads to the creation and/or structuring of musical materials as well as a sociological experiment, i.e. an investigation into the possibilities and potential challenges inherent to spontaneous collective composition and performance. Although it should be seen primarily as a work of art the sociological aspect of
the work should hopefully lead those involved in its performance and any potential spectators to consider the processes involved in contemporary cultural production generally as well as to a reflection on the utility of direct democratic processes and their potential limits in a larger societal context.
As any performance will for purely practical reasons naturally include only a small subset of any larger sociopolitical group, although larger performances including whole societies or indeed all of humanity are of course theoretically if not practically possible, the study is nonetheless assumed to be investigating “aesthetic democracy” as no hierarchy of function or control is established amongst the performers initially, i.e. all are endowed with certain unalienable rights, e.g. the right of participation and freedom of expression, and the end result of the study is to initiate a performance through some form of collective decision making. Wheater or not the initially established democratic relationships between the performers can or should be maintained through the various phases of the study is of course the subject of the study itself.
