Short Synopsis
I composed this piece for Zhang Mou, a good friend of mine, in the summer before his graduation from the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. We have shared many beautiful musical and intellectual moments together, and this piece is meant to serve as a future memento of our friendship and mutual respect. The main theme was influenced by an improvised motif of mine as well as Mou's exceptional tremolo technique.
The piece itself begins with a homage to the romantic guitar tradition but quickly evolves, moving through different keys (all in deceptive relationships), slowly becoming more and more dominated by the bass voice, until the entire texture transitions into a unison tapping section, ultimately followed by a varied reprise that dissolves into a virtuosic coda.
The piece is not, as some short-sighted observers might think, intended as a descriptive work meant to represent, for example, the night or any other physical objects. Instead, the title was influenced both by a somewhat nocturnal phase of my own life, and although the piece has dark moments, I would rather describe it as triumphant rather than depressive. May all those who listen to this music find their own space and time in which they can realize their own inner greatness.
